Payton's Journey to Becoming a Nurse

Payton's Journey to Becoming a Nurse

Hi! My name is Payton and I am a full-time nursing student and part-time certified nursing assistant (CNA). I have just entered my sophomore year of nursing school. While that is exciting, it is completely terrifying at the same time. I know all the stress and hard work will pay off in the long run. When I am not studying, going to clinicals, playing with my dogs, or going to class, I am working at a long-term care facility. I care for geriatric patients or patients with dementia, Alzheimers, disorders, impairments, etc. I truly love what I do and the patients I care for have taught me invaluable life lessons. Working as a CNA has only increased my passion for all things medicine. Eventually, I hope to become a NICU nurse when I graduate with my BSN. Only time will tell what part of nursing will be my true calling. I am open to anything.

As a CNA and a student, I spend a majority of my day on my feet. When I became a CNA, many colleagues, family members, and friends stressed the importance of having good body mechanics and paying attention to your body’s needs. This included bending properly when doing tasks, hydrating throughout the day, and being mindful of using your legs to lift instead of your back. What everyone failed to mention was the stress that my legs would endure. After long shifts and many hours of clinical, I would come home with swollen feet and legs. I tried wearing different shoes and applying heat and ice after my shifts, but nothing was preventing aches, pain, and swelling after every shift. It began to affect my moods and ability to care for my patients. I love what I do and the excitement of nursing school. I am a generally upbeat person and enjoy being active. The pain in my legs after every shift made me lose sleep and affected my daily life not only my ability to work. I realized that if I did not find a solution to my problem I would become seriously injured or unable to perform my job adequately.

Eventually, someone recommended that I try compression socks. Finally, a method that I had not tried! I went out and purchased my first pair of Alpha Sole compression socks and have never looked back. I wish I had known then what I know now. These compression socks have become a staple in my daily outfits. You no longer have to choose fashion over comfort because these nifty socks come in a variety of colors, patterns, styles, and prints. I not only wear them to shifts at the facility I work at, but also when working out, or when I know my day will consist of being on my feet for long periods of time. The compression sock technology applies pressure to your lower legs that help to maintain blood flow and reduces swelling and discomfort. In addition, they prevent varicose veins!  It’s no secret now that these socks are beneficial for everyone! Whether you are a nurse, CNA, student, athlete, diabetic, etc. you need these high-quality compression socks in your life!
